Raghurajpur, located in the Puri district of Odisha, India, is a unique, award-winning "heritage crafts village" where every single household is involved in the art of Pattachitra painting and other handicrafts. From children to the elderly, every person in a family is often involved in some form of art. Women often prepare the canvas, while men handle the intricate painting and sales.
While famous for Pattachitra (painting on cloth or dried palm leaves), the village also specializes in Tussar painting, palm leaf engraving, stone carvings, paper-mâché masks, and cow-dung toys. The artists of Raghurajpur have a long-standing tradition of creating specific Pattachitra paintings used for the annual Ratha Yatra (chariot festival) of Lord Jagannath in Puri, using natural colors derived from minerals, stones, and plants.
